Maugham wrote at a time when experimental modernist literature such as that of William Faulkner, Thomas Mann, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf was gaining increasing popularity and winning critical acclaim. It will probably always remain one of my favourite novels. Non non possiamo far altro che stupirci e seguirlo nei suoi viaggi attraverso i nostri casuali e fortuiti incontri con lui, spesso attraverso gli altrie che altri!

This is among the books I’ve read that I wished I’d read sooner. I was a little conflicted about the wise Indian sages in the book and the didactic nature of the last few chapters, but it was still a pleasant and inspiring read. Write a customer review.

Paperback0 pages. The first Maugham book to have read, I think it’s a great introduction to a fantastic storyteller. He and Isabel, another important character, become engaged early in the book before calling it off. The thought that someone could spend so much time and effort searching only to find so little at the maugha, of that journey is infinitely depressing to me.

Vidi una cosa che non avrei mai creduto possibile, vidi migliaia e migliaia di persone scendere a fare un bagno lustrale e a pregare a voce alta il sole nascente. As such, it lacks the epic quality maugam the Great Gatsby–plus Maugham can’t write American dialog to save his life.

People expected him to come back a bit stuffed up — but they also expected him to get better and then to get a job, find a wife, buy a house with a thoroughly modern kitchen with a dog called Carlos with some kind of strange skin disease. Alexa Actionable Analytics for the Web. I should add, however, that except for this conversation I should not have thought it worth while to write this book.

Ecco cosa si dice ,per esempio, in un dialogo fra il narratore Maugham appunto e una donna che per un periodo “ha avuto a che fare” con Larry: Searching for the reality and spirituality is something and attempting for your life and responsibilities is something else and I don’t think one must be scarified for another.

However, as the genteel lady shows, very few are willing to understand that these widely varying compulsions and lifestyles are all normal displays of the human psyche. So, I was a little annoyed with where this journey ended up, but like life itself, it is the journey and not the destination that is of interest, and this book is a pleasant enough journey. Hemingway and Virginia Woolf use similar plot devices.

To put it bluntly, I remember it as a very emo and somber work, which suited my emo somber teenage self at the time. One of her most amiable traits was that she was never affronted by the naked truth.

The Great Gatsby, on the other hand, didn’t become popular until after Fitzgerald’s death. I can imagine some people being bored to bits with this book.

If it’s the later, Mauyham would say that was just typical of early 20th century literature. View all 3 comments. He is an arch snob and highly affected — sometimes to the point of absurdity.

Somerset Maugham 1 25 Jan 19, This book is supposed to be based on real life — in fact, it claims to be fact that has been fictionalised to protect the innocent.

He generally creates interesting characters — characters that stay with me. While he was maaugham, Isabel married his close friend Gray and they had two daughters. Se si ama leggere, se si provano ancora gusto e pace e brividi a sentirsi raccontare di gente, di fatti, di ambienti, di idee, di cose The story begins through the eyes of Larry’s friends and acquaintances as they witness his personality change after the War.

One surprise to me is that none of Maugham’s characters chose love. Elliot, the arch-snob but also the kindest of men; Isabel, considered to be entertaining, gracious, and tactful; Gray, the quintessence of the Regular Guy; Suzanne, shrewd, roving, and friendly; Sophie, lost, wanton, with a wi,liam attractiveness about her; and finally Larry, so hard and so trustful, lost in the world’s confusion.

And so you come to realize that the wi,liam characters are not Isabel and Larry, but Somerset Maugham and Elliott Templeton.
